This is post-processed version of real snowflake macro photo: tiny hexagonal plate snow crystal with interesting "scratch" across the center. If you look closely, you'll see that actually this is not scratch, but element of pattern - it is absolutely symmetrical at both ends. Other, oval elements of that pattern is not identical, though: they differs in size on opposite sides of this snow crystal.
I used blending mode "difference" for subtracting bright background from this snowflake and creating black part, then combined normal and black variants to make "harlequin" picture.
