This is post-processed snowflake macro photo: medium size snow crystal, around 3 millimeters from tip to tip. This crystal reminds me duck feet or gecko's paw. Snowflake was captured on large sheet of glass with LED lighting from behind.
For this version, i've transferred crystal to clear black background using "difference" blending mode (i like this transferring method very much, though it requires patience and some time). Original photo was on bright grey / blue gradient background. You may find it in galleries "All snowflakes" and "Bright snowflakes".
I'm huge fan of Wilson "Snowflake" Bentley, pioneer of snowflake photography, and for me, his snowflake images are always an ideal to aspire. He used sharp knife to scrape photographic emulsion from plates outside the crystal, to get contrast black background. To get same black background, i use Photoshop brush (instead of knife), and draw by hand precise mask at contour of snow crystal.
