Macro photos of real snowflakes by Alexey Kljatov: ideas for home and office decor, interior designs and gifts. Stellar dendrite snowflakes (and their variation Fernlike dendrites) are common, large crystals with traditional shape and structure. Most snow crystals of this type are big enough to be seen in all details with naked eye - without any magnification tools (especially if you will look at them on contrast, dark background - for example, black woolen mitten). I have seen and photograph huge specimens of this type at regular basis - these snowflakes can reach 10 millimeters from tip to tip, and even bigger! Usually, these crystals have very small center, and long, complex and heavy arms with many side branches, and lots of icy "petals" and "leaves". Stellar and fernlike dendrites are fragile, and often broke in air, when they collide with their neighbors. Lots of these intricate crystals reside in my source photo archive, though processing them is not easy task: my workflow requires manual drawing a mask, which precisely isolates snowflake from background (to be able processing crystal and background separately, with different techniques and settings), and drawing high quality mask for such complex shape takes hours of work and lots of accuracy and patience. All methods of automatic isolation, that i had tried so far, can't offer enough quality of isolation, especially if contrast between edge of the crystal and surrounding background is too low.
